An Icon, at the heart of Liverpool's heritage.

The Royal Liver Building was completed in 1911 and was one of the first buildings in the world to be constructed with a reinforced concrete frame. It was designed in the Edwardian Baroque style by architect Walter Aubrey Thomas and was the tallest building in Europe at the time of its completion. The Liver Birds, perched atop the building’s towers, are symbolic of Liverpool and are one of the most recognised features of the city’s skyline.

In 1207 the city was granted a Royal Charter sealed with an eagle – this became known as the Liver Bird.

Construction began in 1907 with the foundation stone being laid on 11 May 1908.

It took just over 3 years to complete the Royal Liver Building, officially opening 19th July 1911

The Royal Liver Building clocks were started on 22nd June 1911 at 1.40 pm, the precise time George V was crowned. 

1950

Changing Skyline: The Royal Liver Building holds its title as Liverpool’s tallest building until the 1960s. It remains the heart of the waterfront.

2002

UNESCO Recognition: Liverpool’s Waterfront, including the Royal Liver Building, is designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site, recognizing its global cultural significance.

2008

A New Era: Extensive refurbishment is completed, combining historic preservation with modern amenities to ensure the building’s legacy continues.

Liverpool ONE Q-Park: Just a 5-minute walk from the Royal Liver Building, this large parking facility offers secure parking with easy access to the waterfront.

Liverpool Waterfront Car Park: Located directly across from the building, this car park provides convenient access for visitors.

On-Street Parking: Limited parking spaces are available along The Strand and other nearby streets, but these are usually metered and subject to availability.

The Royal Liver Building is just a short walk from Liverpool Lime Street Station, which serves mainline trains from across the UK. From Lime Street, it’s approximately a 15-minute walk to the building.

Directions: Exit the station and head towards St. George’s Hall. Walk down William Brown Street, then turn left onto Castle Street. Continue walking until you reach the waterfront – the Royal Liver Building will be on your right.

Liverpool City Centre is well-served by bus routes. Several routes stop near the Royal Liver Building, including those that run along Chapel Street and the Strand.

 

Many city buses, including services from the main bus station, stop at these locations. You can check local bus schedules through the Merseytravel website or the Traveline app.

Liverpool’s iconic Mersey Ferries depart regularly from the Pier Head, which is right next to the Royal Liver Building. Whether you’re arriving from Wirral or taking a scenic river cruise, you can dock just a short walk away from the building.
